Great value for money camping stove cookset

I really liked the look of the Trangia cooksets but didn't feel I could justify spending £50 plus in case my re-awakened enthusiasm for the great outdoors did not last. At £23 including delivery the Gelert Phoenix 7 cookset looked like a good compromise solution.(Edit 17/04/2012. Now listed at £39.99. At that price I'd hunt about for a discounted Trangia set)What you get:Alcohol burner with screw on, O ring sealed cap, and simmer ring - As mentioned in another review very much like the Esbit alcohol burnerLower and upper windshield / potstand1.7 litre pot1.4 litre potkettleFrying pan / lid (The claimed 23cm diameter is incorrect see below)pot gripPacking strapNylon mesh bagWhat wasn't included was any instructions.Quality and Sizes:Overall the kit seems of reasonable quality given the price. One area of concern is the lack of deburring of the lower windshield, particularly around the burner mounting hole where the burr, running half the circumference of the hole, was accessible and sharp enough to cut fingers. Easily sorted but check your set over before use.The pots are, as claimed, 1.7 and 1.4 litres (brim full). both have a rolled edge at the rim and are perfectly servicable.The kettle, when level, will hold 600ml if filled to just below the spout, 800ml maximum. A fill of 500ml when used in anger seems realistic.The frying pan, despite being claimed at 23cm diameter is, in fact, only 21.5cm at the outside diameter of the flanged edge. The cooking surface of the pan is 19.5cm diameter so if, like me, you decide to supplement this kit with a Trangia Multidisc , go for the 18cm version if you want to stow it inside the pan. See here Trangia Multi Disc for 27 Series Storm Cookers (18 cm)The pot grip holds the pots and pan securely and, against expectation, applying an excessively firm "squeeze" didn't damage the aluminium pivot pin.The packing strap has a plastic clasp which grips surprisingly well and the whole lot (including 21cm Trangia Multidisc) stows into the nylon mesh bag.In Use:I've only tried the set out at home so far but it all goes together easily enough.On first firing the stove seemed to take a long time to "bloom" and was not burning evenly. After it had cooled down I checked the burner holes were not blocked using a small panel pin and tried again. Much better in both terms of bloom time and evenness of flame.Whilst the pot supports are perfectly servicable the pots, kettle and pan do not sit flat in them without careful placement but this is only a minor gripe.Sooting of the underside pots was easily washed off but adding 10% water to the meths (as advised by Trangia) stops the sooting happening at all.Whilst seasoning the frying pan I could see the heat was concentrated in the central 9cm of the pan but did get it smoking hot across the whole cooking surface.Conclusion:For:An excellent value copy of a classic cookset which is perfectly serviceable and I would expect to last me a few seasons before paying the extra to buy an original Trangia set.Against:Needs a little fettling prior to use.The frying pan is not the size claimed

Trangia clone, not Trangia quality in some areas.

Guess who copied the smaller Trangia kit. As a clone, it is actually rather good. The spirit burner doesn't run as hot or as efficiently as a Trangia,but there isn't much in it.Where it really shows is in the pot supports and snap ring. The supports are stiff in operation, bend easily and seem to want to pop the snap ring out when they are folded out to accommodate the frying pan or when repacking. This means your pots/kettle always seem a bit wonky. It doesn't affect the usage but gives a second division feel in use, as does the pot gripper.It all works though; packs easily and can accommodate a fold-a-cup, spork and firesteel or peanut lighter. Mate it up with a genuine Trangia fuel bottle; they are the best you can get, and you have a very functional cooking system for two people.The Phoenix can also use the gas converter and the multi-fuel, giving you a year round, all weather system. For those that doubt these systems, whether Gelert or Trangia, they're not called storm cookers for nothing. Shy of a force 10 gale,you don't need additional windshields; they're stable as a rock and as reliable.Trangia are the best. This is a very affordable, very capable alternative and you won't regret buying it. Remember, you are buying a complete year round capable system for less than the price of some fancy-pants burners. You can have your morning brew before some of the flashier systems have even primed!Nothing beats meths for sloooow simmering jasmine rice, pilau, pasta etc and in low simmer, you'll get 45 minutes from one fill. Free yourselves from the tyranny of the cup-a-soup and pot noodle and actually cook outdoors!

Does exactly what I need it to do for an excellent price, local camping shop was £38. Kettle - good, half full (2 mugs of tea) approx 7 minutes. Have cooked full breakfast in fry pan, eggs,toms,mushrooms,potato cake and the bacon was nice and crispy. Other pots are of good size but have not used yet. Seems to be good burn time on stove and you do find with time how much meths you need to use for doing specific tasks. Saying that if you do fill with too much, allow to cool and then screw cap on to seal chamber and use again later.To sum up, this seems to be an unbeatable price for a piece of kit that will come in very,very handy......Oh by the way the fry pan was in quite a mess after cooking and it washed up like new.....
